The Surprise

Christmas Music from the Salvation Army

This album cover is creepy, but why? I've shown it to several people who have all instinctively recoiled. But the source of the effect is elusive. Is it the fact that the little girl is trying to rip the Pink Panther's eye off? Perhaps it's the partly obscured doll's head that hints at malice. Maybe that those dolls could never fit into that box compels you to scream "It's a trap" to the little girl.

The fact that the surprise turns out to be Christmas music played by various New Zealand-based Salvation Army bands isn't creepy, just crappy. Imagine a kid at Christmas who opens this up to see the picture of a little girl with some new toys and slowly realises that all they're getting is a record of Christmas carols. And the record doesn't even have the Pink Panther's theme song on it!
